AMC Healthcare Raises Awareness for Blue Wednesday

On Wednesday, AMC Healthcare were delighted to raise awareness for Blue Wednesday, an important initiative shedding light on mouth cancer and why it demands our attention, now, more than ever.

Blue Wednesday, observed in November, brings millions of people worldwide together in a collective show of support. Participants wear the colour blue and contribute to donations for 'Cancer Research' and 'Mouth Cancer Action.'

Understanding Mouth Cancer

Mouth cancer, also known as oral cancer, occurs when a cancerous tumour develops on the tongue, mouth, lips, gums, or, less commonly, the tonsils or salivary glands. Tobacco and alcohol use often contribute to most mouth cancers, while throat cancers are frequently linked to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

The Significance of the Colour Blue

Blue, recognised for its associations with tranquillity and calmness, plays a central role on Blue Wednesday. This colour has a profound impact on emotions, evoking feelings of peace and serenity. Delving into the psychological aspects of Blue Wednesday is crucial to understanding the intention behind dedicating a day to it each year.

Wearing Blue with Purpose

Participating in Blue Wednesday is easy yet impactful—simply wear an item of clothing in blue. Whether it is a skirt, a suit, or a dress, donning blue signifies solidarity and compassion. Our AMC Healthcare team were honoured to show support of those who need it and wore blue to the office this week.

Promoting Regular Health Exams

On days like Blue Wednesday, it is essential to emphasise the importance of regular health exams. Detecting any abnormalities in your physical health is a proactive step that could potentially save your life.

What to look for:

  • Persistent mouth ulcers
  • Red or white patches
  • Unusual lumps and swelling

Where to check:

  • Roof and floor of the mouth
  • Inside the cheeks
  • Gums
  • Tonsils
  • Lips
  • Head and neck

If you observe any concerning signs during these checks, please contact 111 for further information and support. In case of an emergency, dial 999 for immediate assistance.

Let us join forces to spread awareness and make a difference. Together, we can contribute to a world where mouth cancer is understood, prevented, and conquered.
